Your website is live. What happens next?
Hosting, updates, changes and the next refresh. A practical guide to keeping your website working after launch.
Launch is the starting point
Your website has gone live. The pages look good, the contact form works and you finally have a link you are happy to share. Now comes the part that is easy to overlook: keeping it useful as your business changes.
A website can stay online while slowly becoming less helpful. An old phone number, an out of date service description or a form that nobody checks can make it harder for a potential customer to take the next step. We recommend treating website care as an ongoing part of running the business.
Know what is being looked after
Hosting gives your website somewhere to live. Maintenance covers the work needed to keep it functioning. Content changes keep it relevant. A provider may bundle these together, but the scope should be clear before you agree to a plan.
- Hosting and domain: who manages each, and when do they renew?
- Routine care: what gets checked, updated and backed up?
- Content changes: how do you request edits, and what is included?
- Support: who do you contact when something needs attention?
- Future improvements: when is a wider refresh discussed?
Check the customer journey regularly
Start with the actions that matter to your business. Open your site on your phone, find a service, try the enquiry form and check that the message arrives with the right person. Follow any booking link through to the point where a customer can choose an appointment.
Then read the site as someone who has never met you. Are your services, locations and opening hours correct? Do your photographs still represent your work? Is the next step obvious? Keep a short list of changes and send them through together.
Make someone responsible
The best care arrangement is one you can actually use. Agree who looks after the technical work, who supplies new business information and how updates are reviewed. Keep access to your domain and other business accounts clearly recorded.
At Go Forth, the idea is straightforward: the website keeps moving with your business. When comparing options, ask how the ongoing arrangement works as carefully as you ask about the initial build.
Before choosing a website provider, ask: once we launch, who is responsible for keeping this current?
